Their, There, They're & 11 More Confusing Pairs

Same sound, different spelling, different meaning. English built its homophone collection out of pure chaos. Here's how to tell each pair apart for good.

1. their / there / they're

  • their: belongs to them (their house)
  • there: a place (over there)
  • they're: "they are" in disguise (they're here)

Trick: "their has an i for individuals who own it, there contains here, and they're is just two words wearing a coat."

2. affect / effect

  • affect: the verb, an action (the rain affects my mood)
  • effect: the noun, a result (the effect was instant)

Trick: "A for Action, E for End result."

3. its / it's

  • its: possession, no apostrophe (the dog wagged its tail)
  • it's: "it is" (it's raining)

Trick: apostrophes replace letters. If you can say "it is", the apostrophe belongs. If you can't, it doesn't.

4. lose / loose

  • lose: to misplace or fail (don't lose the key)
  • loose: not tight (a loose screw)

Trick: "If you lose an 'o', you lose. If you have two o's, it's loose, too many o's for a tight fit."

5. your / you're

  • your: belongs to you (your coffee)
  • you're: "you are" (you're early)

Trick: same as its/it's. Read it out loud as "you are" and see if it still makes sense.

6. to / too / two

  • to: direction (go to school)
  • too: also, or too much (me too, too hot)
  • two: the number (two cookies)

Trick: "the w in two stands for the way too many extra letters, and two is the only one that's a number."

7. principle / principal

  • principle: a rule or belief (a matter of principle)
  • principal: main, or the head of a school (the principal is your pal)

Trick: "The principal is your pal."

8. weather / whether

  • weather: rain or shine (the weather is nice)
  • whether: a choice (whether or not)

Trick: "there's weather outside and h in whether. The h is a help with choices."

9. accept / except

  • accept: to receive or agree (accept the offer)
  • except: excluding (everyone except me)

Trick: "except excludes, the x marks the ones left out."

10. advice / advise

  • advice: the noun, the guidance (take my advice)
  • advise: the verb, the action (I advise you to wait)

Trick: "ice is a thing (noun), ise sounds like 'eyes'. Verbs do things with eyes."

11. desert / dessert

  • desert: sand, or to abandon (the Sahara desert)
  • dessert: the sweet course (chocolate dessert)

Trick: "dessert has two s's because you always want seconds."

12. than / then

  • than: comparison (bigger than)
  • then: time (then we left)

Trick: "then has an e for every time it happens later; than has an a for and... no, just: time = e."
